Have you ever wondered what life without alcohol would actually feel like? Maybe you’re drinking every weekend, but there’s a quiet voice in your head saying, I don’t think I like this anymore.

I’ve been there. I used to believe life without alcohol would feel empty, like there’d be this huge void. I thought the fun would be gone, and I’d spend my weekends feeling like I was missing out. But when I finally gave up alcohol, I realised how far off those fears were.

In this post, I want to share my honest story about why I stopped drinking, what I thought it would be like, and the reality of what happened after I gave it up.

My Biggest Worry About Not Drinking

For years, my biggest fear about giving up alcohol was that there’d be a void. I thought I’d be walking around feeling a little more empty than people who drank.

I believed this so much that I even remember watching an Elton John documentary and thinking, Wow, what a shame he can’t have champagne anymore. What a waste! That’s how ingrained those beliefs were in me.

My Journey With Alcohol

I started drinking in my late teens. Back then, it was just what we did on the weekends—go out, have drinks and socialise ot let off steam from the Leaving Cert study.

But by the time I hit my 30s and early 40s, alcohol had become something much bigger in my life. I was a weekend drinker, looking forward to that first glass of wine on Friday night like it was a reward.

I wasn’t just having a drink or two, though. I was always the one who drank the most at family gatherings and parties, often ending the night in tears. I’d wake up the next morning sick, stressed, and anxious, feeling puffy, unhealthy, and miserable.

I’d start every Monday determined to be “good” again, only to undo everything by Friday night. It was an exhausting, never-ending cycle.

The Turning Point

By 2020, I started Googling things like, What is it like to not drink alcohol? I hated how alcohol made me feel, but I was scared to give it up.

One night in 2021, while on a family holiday in Fuengirola, Spain, it all came to a head. After two glasses of wine, I burst into tears and said to Joe, “I don’t think I want to drink anymore.”

It felt terrifying to admit it out loud, but at the same time, I knew I couldn’t keep going the way I was

Joe said, “If this is what you want, I’ll do it with you.”

That moment changed everything.

On May 1st, 2022, I stopped drinking for good.

What Life Without Alcohol Is Really Like

Here’s the truth: there is no void.

What I thought would feel like a loss has become one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. My life has completely transformed:

  • Better health and energy. I was shocked by how much weight I was carrying just from weekend drinking—and not just the drinks, but the extra food, the hangover meals, and the lack of movement.
  • Consistent mood. Without alcohol, there are no more emotional rollercoasters. I feel steady and clear-headed every day.
  • Deeper connections. I’m more present with my family, my kids, and myself. Everything feels more real.

What I’ve Learned

If you’re considering giving up alcohol, start by observing how it’s affecting your life. Notice how it makes you feel, how long it impacts your mood, and how it fits into your week.

Change is scary, especially when it feels like such a big part of your life. But what’s on the other side of that fear is worth it.

My Life Today

Since I stopped drinking, my life has completely opened up. I feel more grounded, calm, and connected to myself than I ever have before.

If you’re in that phase where you’re thinking about it but not sure, take your time. There’s no rush. Start by noticing, and when you’re ready, you’ll know.
