The Simplest Way to Get Fit Over 40 with No Gym Required
Hey there, and welcome to the Jessica Cooke Podcast Episode 219!
I’m so glad you’re here, and I’m excited to dive into today’s topic. Whether you’re listening while driving, out for a walk, cooking, cleaning, or just relaxing, a big hello and a hug from me to you!
Today, I want to talk about something near and dear to my heart: the simplest, easiest way to get fit over 40—no gym required.
I know firsthand how daunting it can be to start your fitness journey, especially when gyms feel overwhelming or time is short. But trust me, you don’t need a gym or a ton of time to get fit.
Let me share my story and show you exactly how I discovered the best way to stay fit and healthy over 40.
My Journey to Fitness
Before I became a fitness coach, getting fit felt like an uphill battle for me. I tried all the usual things—jogging (which I hated), joining the gym (which I also hated), and just about everything else.
Jogging was so public, and I always felt like people were watching me. It was uncomfortable, to say the least. I even joined a gym, thinking that was the answer. But I hated that too. The noise, the smell, the crowds—it all just felt wrong.
So, I totally get it if you’re not into the gym or running around in public. I used to be in your shoes.
Then in 2008, everything changed for me.
I became a fitness coach and discovered a workout routine that completely transformed my life—strength training combined with low-impact interval training. That’s when the lightbulb went off for me. This was what I had been searching for all along.
The Workout That Changed Everything
When I started teaching my signature workouts, I was obsessed.
I held classes at Leisureland and packed out the place with 40 or 50 women at a time. It was electric! Joe would be there helping out, and we’d have the music cranked up while we went through this amazing blend of strength training and low-impact interval training.
I fell in love with it because it worked—and it was fun.
The results spoke for themselves. Women in my classes were getting stronger, fitter, and happier. It wasn’t just about looking good (although that’s a bonus), but feeling good too.
Strength training and low-impact interval training combined delivered not only great physical results but also a massive boost in mood and energy levels.
Why Strength Training and Low-Impact Interval Training Work So Well
The magic of these workouts is in the combination of strength training with low-impact interval training. This combination helps you get fit without the pounding on your joints that high-impact workouts can bring. Plus, it's perfect for women over 40.
- Strength Training: This is simply resistance on your muscles. You don’t need heavy weights or fancy machines. Just enough resistance to challenge your muscles and give you that toned, lean look without bulking up. It also revs up your metabolism, helping you burn more calories even at rest.
- Low-Impact Interval Training: This is where you get your cardio fitness without hours on a treadmill. Instead of a long, steady slog on a machine, you do short bursts of effort followed by rest. It’s fun, it’s quick, and it’s incredibly effective for heart health and stress relief.
Plus, this style of workout is adaptable. You don’t have to jump around or do anything high-impact. You can modify the movements to be low-impact and still get an excellent workout.
MOTIVATING fact
Combining strength training with low-impact interval workouts can increase your metabolism by up to 15% and boost cardiovascular fitness by 20-30%, while also reducing stress by up to 30%—ideal for women over 40." [Sources: ACSM, 2014; Journal of Sports Science and Medicine, 2016; NIH, 2017]
How You Can Fit This Into Your Life
Here’s the best part: you only need 90 minutes per week to get fit. Yes, you heard that right! No endless hours in the gym. Just two 30-minute workouts and one 20-minute workout per week. That’s it.
When I had my gym and was running it with a team of coaches, we had our clients doing hour-long sessions three times a week.
But after years of experimenting with different workout lengths and routines, I found that you could achieve incredible results in less time.
I recommend breaking up your week like this:
- Monday: 30 minutes
- Tuesday: 30 minutes
- Thursday: 20 minutes
Get your workouts done early in the week when motivation is high, and leave yourself some breathing room later in the week for other commitments. I’ve tried working out at night, in the morning, and at all different times, and this schedule works the best for me.
Of course, you should find what works best for you and stick with it.
What You’ll Need
You don’t need much to do these workouts. Just a small area in your house, a mat, a set of weights, and maybe a step if you want to challenge yourself a bit more. That’s all. When it’s time to work out, just pull out your equipment, get it done, and put it away. Simple, right?
You don’t need to overthink it. Just move your body, challenge your muscles, and you’ll feel amazing.
The Benefits You’ll See
- Get Stronger: You’ll feel it in your body, whether you’re picking up your kids or grandkids, joining a dance class, or playing a round of golf.
- Feel Fitter: You’ll have the cardio stamina to do more of what you love—whether that’s hiking, playing tennis, or just keeping up with life’s demands.
- Boost Your Mood: Exercise is a natural mood booster, and these short, engaging workouts will leave you feeling more positive and energized.
- Improved Bone Health: Strength training increases your bone density, which is so important as we age. This helps reduce the risk of fractures and osteoporosis.
- Burn More Calories at Rest: Strength training boosts your metabolism, helping you burn more calories even when you’re not working out.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a woman over 40 and you’ve struggled to find a workout routine that works for you, trust me—this is it. Strength training combined with low-impact interval training is the simplest, easiest way to get fit in the shortest amount of time. It’s fun, it’s effective, and it fits into even the busiest of schedules.
Start small. Commit to 90 minutes a week, and stay consistent. Your body will thank you, and you’ll be amazed at how good you feel.
