10 Tips To Help You Turn Up To Your Workouts.

Working out does so much for you. Dedicating just 30 minutes a day, 4-5 days per week, changes your life.

You sleep better, feel better, your skin hair and nails benefit. You get stronger bones and muscles, you help prevent disease, you help prevent stiff and creaky bones as you age. You feel more capable in control. Your confidence grows. You feel better and fit better in your clothes.

Yet the big problem I see is too many people tie weight loss to fitness. Instead of focusing on it as medicine to take every day, they focus on the fact that they ‘should’ workout, because they ‘have to’, because they know they ‘need’ to lose weight.

The problem with this is that they are never going to stick to working out long term, because they haven’t associated their workout with all the positives things it brings. And they haven’t made it a non-negotiable. It’s still a negotiable. They allow themselves to be led by their mood and how they feel, and don’t workout when they don’t want to. This is all of us starting out. We have all been there.

The real magic happens when you wake up one morning and decide your workouts are non-negotiable. That you will just show up, regardless of how you feel, and get your medicine done. This takes time and effort and a good month to two months of showing up consistently.

When you are in the groove of this, and working out becomes a part of your life, you know when you need a break and time out. You can trust yourself enough with your workouts that you know if you take a random day off, or a week off, it’s such a part of your life now, that it’s no big deal.

Here’s my top tips to get there:

When starting out, and you haven’t found a routine, never skip a workout.

Always commit to doing 5 minutes at least, and see how you feel.

Keep it slow and steady, when you’re not in the mood.

When you’re not in the mood, just start off by going through the motions.

Aim to do your workouts either first thing in the morning or if it’s later on in the day, while you’re still moving.

Really try and get some of your weekly sessions in, first thing after you wake up. Your mental health will benefit from this all day long.

Find the joy in your sessions. Focus on your form, progress with heavier weights, know the benefits, make it a hobby you enjoy.

Test out your fitness from your sessions. Go on a hike, do an event, do something that shows you how far you’ve come.

Enjoy being fit and healthy, it’s the best feeling there is. It is not all about weight loss.
